Knightdale Town Sustainability Initiatives

Knightdale is taking steps to protect the environment and lessen our contribution to climate change. The Town of Knightdale has endorsed a transition from fossil fuels to clean energy by 2050 or sooner, as well as legislation that can help Knightdale achieve clean energy. The Town of Knightdale signed a climate resolution brought by the Citizens’ Climate Lobby on March 17th, 2021. North Carolina is already experiencing the impact through warmer temperatures, higher sea levels, and more dangerous weather. These conditions can negatively impact our wildlife and agriculture, and by extension, our economy, food, and daily lives. Climate change is both a local and global issue, and everyone has a role in its mitigation. As the Town of Knightdale works to become greener, so can individuals in the community. The Town created a Sustainability committee consisting of Council members, citizens and town administrators. This committee will serve as a coordinating arm that will strategize sustainable solutions for the Knightdale municipality as well as its citizens. The team meets monthly to discuss the implementation of solutions and get updates on the progress of sustainable matters. For more information about the Sustainable Committee, contact Suzanne Yeatts.

The Mayor's Monarch Pledge is a commitment to "create habitat for the monarch butterfly and pollinators, and to educate residents about how they can make a difference at home and in their community." In adherence to the Pledge, Knightdale has committed to:

  • Adopt a proclamation regarding our commitment to the Mayor's Monarch Pledge (adopted in 2022)
  • Provide public education on butterfly gardens (to do)
  • Engage garden leaders to support conservation (done with Two Green Thumbs Garden Club)
  • Work with HOAs to promote gardens (done)
  • Engage with developers/architects to create habitats (in UDO)
  • Plant/maintain gardens at Knightdale Station Park

Knightdale has partnered with Duke Energy to install EV charging stations at Town Hall and Knightdale Station Park. The collaborative program should be in place by late 2022 or early 2023. For more information on this initiative, contact Development Services

Upcoming Initiatives

Knightdale continues to ideate and innovate when it comes to the sustainable efforts on behalf of the town. Some of those solutions include (but are not limited to):

  • Calculating our carbon footprint as an organization, being transparent regarding where it is now and what our goal for reduction will be
  • Repairing sidewalk gaps and developing goals to complete them for optimal walkability
  • Working with Knightdale Parks, Recreation and Cultural Programs to create future special events focused on sustainability
