Criminal Investigative Unit

The Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU) is responsible for conducting follow-up investigations of designated criminal offenses initially responded to by the Patrol Division. The unit also initiates proactive investigative efforts, including drug and vice-related cases, using intelligence obtained from community members, informants, and law enforcement partners. Criminal cases that are complex, serious in nature, or require extended investigative resources are assigned to the CIU to ensure thorough, consistent, and professional case management.

The unit is comprised of five detectives and one Sergeant, who reports to a Lieutenant. CIU personnel are responsible for investigating a wide range of offenses, including but not limited to major crimes such as homicide, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and kidnapping, as well as motor vehicle theft, forgery, fraud, identity theft, burglary, larceny, serious assaults, and human trafficking.

In addition to criminal investigations, detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit conduct comprehensive background investigations for prospective department employees. These investigations are a critical component of the agency’s hiring process and are conducted to ensure candidates meet the department’s professional, ethical, and legal standards.

Detectives work closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners, as well as with the District Attorney’s Office, to ensure thorough investigations and support successful case prosecution.
