Pollution Prevention & Good Housekeeping

The Town of Knightdale is committed to operating all Town facilities in a manner that prevents stormwater pollution. Pollution prevention and good housekeeping is accomplished through the implementation of seven required programs.

Facilities O&M Program

To manage Town owned facilities that have the potential to generate stormwater pollution. Town staff perform facility inspections and provide routine maintenance necessary to prevent stormwater pollution. Additionally, staff are trained on general stormwater awareness, pollution prevention, and good housekeeping practices.

Spill Response Program

The Town maintains a spill prevention and response procedure for all facilities and operations that store and/or use materials that have the potential to contaminate stormwater runoff. Written spill response procedures are maintained at Town facilities and staff are trained on proper spill response procedures.

MS4 O&M Program

The Town maintains a proactive program for MS4 inspections and maintenance. This plan implements an O&M for all stormwater assets owned and operated by the Town. This includes catch basins, storm sewer pipe, outfalls, and ditches.

Municiple SCM O&M Program

To manage all municipally owned, operated, and/or maintained structural Stormwater Control Measures (SCMs) that are installed for compliance with the Town’s Post-Construction Site Runoff Controls program. The Town maintains an inventory of all municipally owned SCMs and performs routine inspections and maintenance to ensure longevity and function.

Pesticide, Herbicide, and Fertilizer Management Program

To minimize all water quality impacts from the use of landscape chemicals. The Town ensures employees and contracted professionals utilizing pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizer are properly trained and certified.

Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance Program

To prevent and minimize contamination of stormwater runoff from areas used for municipal vehicle and equipment maintenance and/or cleaning, The Town provides routine pollution prevention training to staff and performs routine inspections per established frequencies.

Street Sweeping and Maintenance Program

To help reduce pollutants in stormwater runoff from municipally-owned streets, roads, and parking lots within the Towns corporate limits, routine street sweeping is conducted to remove all sediment, trash, and debris from the right-of-way.
