KNIGHTDALE - In celebration of Arbor Day and being recognized as a Tree City USA, the Town of Knightdale’s annual Arbor Day festivities will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Knightdale Station Park, where a tree will be planted in celebration of the Town’s commitment to trees and the social, fiscal, and environmental benefits they bring to our community. Knightdale Public Works will provide assistance during the tree planting ceremony. Additionally, Mayor James Roberson will read the Arbor Day Proclamation and a representative of the North Carolina Forest Service will present Knightdale’s recertification package as a Tree City for the seventeenth time.
Development Services has also partnered with Knightdale Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Programs to sponsor a tree-themed art contest and ice cream party for children from the Knightdale Track-Out Camp. Track-out participants will create tree-focused art and the best drawing will be awarded a $25 gift certificate and a plant to take home. Second through fifth place will also receive a small plant. The Town would like to thank Taylor’s Nursery for their generous donations to our annual event.
Arbor Day was started in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska City, Nebraska and is typically celebrated by planting a tree. The observance provides an opportunity to celebrate urban forestry and civic commitment to trees as part of healthy urban environments. Today Arbor Day is celebrated across the United States and around the world and is an event of great significance for Knightdale, as it exemplifies our community’s commitment to aesthetics, greenery, urban forestry, and a high quality of life through the support of our Town’s natural resources.
