Composting is a great way to help the environment by diverting waste away from landfills and enriching our soil. This prevents the harmful release of greenhouse gasses that contribute to climate change. There are different styles and ways to compost, along with many types of materials that can be composted.
International Compost Awareness Week is May 3-9, 2026
During the month of May each year, Wake County offers compost bins at a discounted rate of $55 in celebration of International Compost Awareness Week. Backyard compost bins can divert an average of 500 pounds of organic waste per household from the landfill each year.
