Composting is a great way to help the environment by diverting waste away from landfills and enriching our soil. This prevents the harmful release of greenhouse gasses that contribute to climate change. There are different styles and ways to compost, along with many types of materials that can be composted.
International Compost Awareness Week is May 3-9, 2026
During the month of May each year, Wake County offers compost bins at a discounted rate of $55 in celebration of International Compost Awareness Week. Backyard compost bins can divert an average of 500 pounds of organic waste per household from the landfill each year.
If you don't have the capacity to compost at home, you can still help keep food waste out of the landfills! As a resident of Wake County, you have access to all the great programs and services Wake County government provides, including multiple sites to drop off food scraps. Food waste is collected, transported to an industrial facility, turned into compost, and donated to many community gardens across the Triangle.
Food scraps can be dropped off at the following locations. Check out Wake County's Food Scrap Composting page for operating hours and a list of acceptable items.
