Leonard Ray was born on January 31, 1942, in Johnston County, NC. He lived in Knightdale for 50 years. During that time he coached Girl's Softball and helped with Parks and Recreation for his children. He was also a member of Green Pine Baptist Church but was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church at the time of his passing. There, he was a faithful member of the Men's Sunday School class.
