Town Sustainability Initiatives

Knightdale knows sustainability cannot be achieved without the efforts of everyone. The Town continues to ideate and innovate when it comes to the sustainable initiatives. Learn how we're playing our part below. 

Sustainability committee 

The Town created a Sustainability committee consisting of Council members and town staff.This committee serves as a coordinating arm that will strategize sustainable solutions for the Knightdale municipality as well as its residents.

July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026

  • Maintained our Tree City USA designation - 25th year!
  • Mayor's Monarch Pledge
  • Proclaimed March 20 as Knightdale Arbor Day and celebrated with a ceremonial tree planting at the Environmental Park 
  • Observed Creek Week by hosting a shred truck, milkweed seed giveaway, and litter sweep
  • Partnered with Charge OnSite to upgrade existing EV charging stations at Town Hall & Knightdale Station Park 
  • Hosted a Storywalk in the Environmental Park featuring the book "A Place for Rain" by Michelle Schaub
  • Held a community litter sweep 
  • Completed drainage improvement projects on Forest Drive and Breckenridge Drive with the goal of reducing erosion, improving water quality, and enhancing the resilience of public infrastructure
  • Partnered with North Carolina's New and Emerging Stormwater Technology (NEST) Program to install a PerkFilter stormwater treatment system at the Law Enforcement Center. The system is an emerging technology that uses an innovative approach to capture sediment, nutrients, hydrocarbons, and other pollutants commonly found in urban stormwater runoff.

  • Maintained Tree City USA designation

  • Installed environmental educational signage at the Environmental Park
  • Proclaimed March 21 as Knightdale Arbor Day and planted two trees at the East Regional Library 
  • Planted 250 native trees at Fire Station #1
  • Observed Creek Week by hosting a shred truck, plant giveaway, and litter sweep 
  • Hosted a Storywalk in the Environmental Park featuring the book "The Little Raindrop" by Joanna Gray
  • Sustainable principles and considerations added to the KnightdaleNext V.2 Comprehensive Plan 

July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024

  • Budget line item created to support sustainable efforts
  • Evaluation of Town owned properties for solar energy capability
  • Sustainable considerations added to the River District Small Area Plan
  • Refillable water bottle stations installed at select parks
  • Idle reduction technology added to four new fire trucks
  • Two electric vehicles added to Town fleet
  • Proclaimed March 22 as Knightdale Arbor Day and celebrated with a ceremonial tree planting at the Knightdale Station Park Pollinator Garden
  • Increased sidewalk connections
  • Mayor's Monarch Pledge
  • Maintained Tree City USA designation

  • Creation of Sustainability committee

  • Increased access to solar energy with zoning amendment ZTA-1-23
  • Completion of the Town's Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP)
