Recycling & Waste Reduction

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Did you know this popular environmental slogan is listed in order of priority and potential impact? The most effective way to minimize our impact on the environment is to use less and remove excess from the waste stream. When we reduce waste, reuse products, and recycle, greenhouse gas emissions are lessened. This saves energy, helps to address climate change, and protects the environment. These practices also help members of our community save money and prevent the filling of landfills.

Check out the ideas below for how you can implement the three Rs in your daily life! Remember, even small steps and changes make a difference!

Reduce
  • Buy less - only purchase what you truly need and opt for quality over quantity; consider borrowing, renting, or sharing items
  • Say no to plastic bags and shop with reusable bags
  • Go paperless - switch bills and other mail to electronic versions; opt out of junk mail
  • Avoid single use containers - whenever possible, say no to single-use coffee cups, disposable utensils, and plastic straws
  • Use a reusable water bottle (steel or glass) rather than single use disposable bottled water
  • Shop local
Reuse
  • Upcycle items into new products, like using glass jars, tins, and other containers for storage, organization, or planters
  • Donate gently used clothing, furniture, and household items to local animal rescues, food banks, crisis centers, and other charitable organizations
  • Mend and repair clothing, shoes, handbags, and luggage whenever possible
  • Maintain and repair appliances, household items, and durable goods before replacing or buying new
  • Purchase refills for products you use often like soap and shampoo
  • Buy items secondhand rather than new
