Patrol

The Patrol Division is the largest division within the police department and the backbone of our organization, providing professional law enforcement services 24 hours a day. The Patrol Division Commander holds the rank of Police Captain and oversees all operations. The division is comprised of four patrol squads, commanded by two Watch Commanders holding the rank of Lieutenant. Each patrol squad is supervised by officers holding the ranks of Sergeant and Corporal. Patrol personnel are responsible for a variety of law enforcement functions, including the preservation of public peace, the protection of life and property, the prevention of crime, and the enforcement of state and local laws.

In addition to patrol duties, the division is tasked with conducting the preliminary investigation of all crimes. Officers assigned to the Patrol Division routinely conduct follow-up criminal investigations involving misdemeanors and certain felony offenses. Uniformed personnel are also required to enforce traffic laws and investigate traffic crashes involving vehicles and pedestrians. Members of the Patrol Division work closely with other town departments in enforcing the Town of Knightdale Code of Ordinances.
