Permits and Inspections
The Knightdale Development Services Department is your one-stop shop for all residential and commercial permit needs within the Knightdale town limits and extraterritorial jurisdiction. Our permitting processes have been streamlined in an effort to help you gain permit approval in a timely fashion.
The Knightdale Development Services Department issues:
Trade permits provide for the permitting and inspection of projects with single and multiple trades when a building permit is not required. Trade permits may be issued for electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or refrigeration work, any combination of the those trades, or for all four trades.
To apply for a Trade Permit, please visit the new Permit Portal. You will first need to set up an account using an email address and password. After verifying your email address, you will be able to submit an application, obtain status updates, pay permit fees, and schedule inspections through the portal system.
Please note that if you wish to apply for a Trade Permit in person at Town Hall, you will need to pay via check (made out to Wake County) or cash. At this time, we cannot accept in-person credit card payments.
To apply for a Building Permit, please visit the new Permit Portal. You will first need to set up an account using an email address and password. After verifying your email address, you will be able to submit an application, obtain plan review comments, status updates, pay permit fees, and schedule inspections through the portal system.
Please note there is a $1,500 limit for all online credit card transactions. Permit fees exceeding this limit will need to be paid via electronic check in the portal system or at Town Hall via cash or check (made out to Wake County). At this time, we cannot accept in-person credit card payments.
While the Knightdale Development Services Department is your one-stop shop for permits, we contract with Wake County's Inspections Department to complete all building and trade inspections. Despite many of the inspections being made by Wake County inspectors, please note that the first (setback) and last (Certificate of Occupancy/Completion) inspections are made by the Town of Knightdale and not Wake County.
TOWN OF KNIGHTDALE INSPECTIONS
- Setback Inspection: The first inspection called in for a building permit to ensure the structure is located correctly on the lot. The setback inspection must be completed prior to a footing inspection being scheduled.
- Driveway/Sidewalk Inspection: This inspection is called in after the forms have been set, but before any concrete is poured.
- Certificate of Occupancy (CO) Inspection: The final inspection made by the Town to ensure that all zoning issues have been addressed prior to issuance of a CO. This inspection is different than the Building Final, which is performed by Wake County.
To schedule any of the above noted inspections, please call (919) 217-2246 before 5 p.m. and leave a message with the permit number, address, type of inspection requested, and contact information. The inspection will be completed on the next business day.
WAKE COUNTY INSPECTIONS
All building and mechanical/trade inspections are completed by the Wake County Department of Planning, Development, and Inspections on behalf of the Town. To schedule any building or mechanical/trade inspections, please have your permit number ready and call (919) 856-6222.
